In this post we want to share a few practical tips on how to clean plexiglass to keep your acrylic's (plexiglass) finish looking crystal clear. Commercial cleaning products and abrasive materials can scratch the acrylic sheet or give it a hazy appearance, so follow these best practices for cleaning plexiglass to insure your plastic stays looking great.
We recommend Brillianize or Novus. You can also use a solution of mild dish soap and water. These are safe for plastics, and you can even purchase solutions that help minimize the appearance of any scratches.
DO NOT use:
Ammonias
All Purpose Cleaners
Abrasives
Dry Cloths
Aromatic Cleaners
Windex
Commercial cleaners will cause the material to become hazy, and anything scented can leave a residue. Once the material is damaged with these products, you can’t return the plastic to its original clarity.
DO use a lint free microfiber towel
Acrylic is non-porous and moisture resistant. A microfiber towel with cleaner is an effective way to clean the material and remove 99% of microbes.
Tip: You can use a blow dryer on the cool setting to gently blow off dust or debris before wiping the material down.
DO rinse the cloth if it gets dusty or dirty while wiping the acrylic
If the rag traps debris, it can scratch the material as you clean. We highly recommend following the blow dryer tip above and rinsing the cloth after your initial wipe down.
DO NOT use abrasive materials, sponges, or rags
These will scratch the material, significantly reducing clarity.
DO NOT use a dry cloth
Always apply the cleaner before wiping with the microfiber towel. If you try to wipe off dust or debris without cleaner, it can scratch the material.
These tips are also an effective and safe way to clean other plastics like PETG, colored and textured acrylic, or polycarbonate.
How To Clean Plexiglass FAQ
What cleaning solutions are safe to use on plexiglass?
Safe cleaning solutions for plexiglass include warm water with a mild dish soap or a specialized plastic or acrylic cleaner. Avoid cleaning solutions containing ammonia, alcohol, or aromatics as they can cause damage.
Can I use a regular glass cleaner to clean plexiglass?
No, regular glass cleaners, particularly those containing ammonia, should not be used on plexiglass as they can cause clouding or damage to the surface. Instead, use mild soap and water or a specialized plexiglass cleaner.
What should I do to avoid scratching my plexiglass while cleaning?
To avoid scratching plexiglass, always use a soft microfiber cloth or sponge and gently wipe in a circular motion. Avoid using paper towels or scrubbing brushes, which can scratch the surface.
How can I remove stubborn stains from plexiglass?
Stubborn stains on plexiglass can often be removed using a non-abrasive acrylic cleaner. Apply the cleaner and gently wipe with a soft, clean, microfiber cloth in a circular motion. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a clean cloth to avoid water spots.
Is there a specific tool or cloth that is best for cleaning plexiglass?
The best tool for cleaning plexiglass is a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth. These cloths are gentle on the surface and help avoid scratching. Sponges can also be used if they are soft and non-abrasive.
How can I prevent dust accumulation on plexiglass surfaces?
To prevent dust accumulation on plexiglass, regularly wipe the surface with a microfiber cloth. Using anti-static cleaner sprays or wipes can also help by reducing the static charge that attracts dust particles.
How often should I clean my plexiglass items for optimal maintenance?
The frequency of cleaning plexiglass items for optimal maintenance depends on the usage and environment. Generally, a weekly gentle wipe-down is sufficient. For items in high-use areas or dusty environments, more frequent cleaning may be needed. Always clean using the appropriate methods to avoid damaging the surface.
