UHMW Sheets - Ultra High Molecular Weight Plastic
UHMW Polyethylene Sheets are made from Ultra High Molecular Weight plastic with an abrasion resistance that outperforms most metals in wear applications, combined with a self-lubricating surface that needs no oil or grease. Available in natural (off-white) and black. Popular brand names include Tivar, Polystone M, GUR, and Polyslick. If your spec calls out any of those, you're looking for this material.
Why UHMW Plastic?
Most engineering plastics make you choose between toughness and machinability. UHMW doesn't. The molecular weight is high enough that the polymer chains are essentially tangled together, which is what gives it wear resistance that consistently outperforms nylon, acetal, and mild steel in sliding contact applications. It machines cleanly on standard equipment, cuts without chipping, and doesn't require specialized tooling.
It's also self-lubricating. No oil, no grease, no maintenance schedule for the bearing surface. Parts run quieter and last longer without intervention.
Common Industries UHMW Plastic Is Used In
General manufacturing and machine parts are the most common use cases. Conveyor wear strips, chain guides, star wheels, cam followers, and slide pads are all standard UHMW applications. It's the default choice anywhere metal-on-metal contact creates noise, wear, or contamination issues.
Marine dock fenders and anti-skid walkway panels are common structural uses. The material doesn't absorb water, won't rot, and handles repeated impact from boats and equipment without cracking.
Chute liners are one of the most practical applications. UHMW's low coefficient of friction keeps material moving without bridging or buildup, and its abrasion resistance holds up against sand, gravel, ore, and grain that would wear through other materials fast.
Food processing is another place where you will see UHMW used often. UHMW meets FDA requirements for food contact applications and can be sanitized with commercial cleaners without degrading, warping, or absorbing odors. Cutting board surfaces, conveyor guides, and food-safe wear components all get specified in UHMW regularly.
Playground and recreational equipment manufacturers use UHMW for slide surfaces, wear pads, and contact components where durability and a smooth surface matter more than appearance.
UHMW vs. HDPE
We commonly get asked the difference between Ultra High Molecular Weight Plastic vs. High Density Polyethylene Plastic. Both are polyethylene family materials, and both handle moisture and most chemicals well. HDPE sheets are the better call for structural panels, cutting boards, and applications where stiffness matters. UHMW wins on abrasion resistance and impact toughness, particularly in sliding and wear contact applications. HDPE is also easier to weld, which is why it dominates chemical tank fabrication. If you're not sure which is best for your project, call us before ordering.
UHMW vs. Polypropylene and ABS
We also often get asked how to know when to choose between UHMW vs. Polypropylene and ABS. It really depends how you will be using it. For chemical tank and fluid handling fabrication, polypropylene is usually the better choice because it's weldable and has superior chemical resistance at elevated temperatures. For enclosures, machine guards, and impact-resistant structural parts, ABS plastic sheet is worth comparing. UHMW's specific advantage is wear contact applications where neither of those materials keep up.
Cut to Size Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
Standard UHMW sheets run 48x96 (about the size of a sheet of plywood) and in thicknesses from 1/4" to 4". Our cut-to-size service handles UHMW with a same-day turnaround. It machines cleanly and holds tight tolerances, so if your application needs a specific dimension, just bring the specs.
We also offer custom fabrication, so if you have a project where you need specific parts or sizes of UHMW you have found the right partner.
